A HALF-HANDLEBAR LEGEND.

We first have to take a forty-year step backwards if we want to understand how the mythical Moto Guzzi V7 Sport, which inspired today's V7 Cafè Classic, has evolved. In 1969 the Mandello del Lario mechanics increased the cubic capacity of their transverse 90° V engine from 703 to 757cc which greatly increased the level of maximum performances without in any way diminishing the notorious reputation of reliability and sturdiness that was behind the success of the V7 in the market and with the police forces of half the world. Fully aware of the power of this engine, Moto Guzzi decided to publish the results, building a faired prototype of the V7 Special with the new 757cc engine which, in June and October of that same year on the high speed ring of the Monza track, set numerous records among them the 100 km, at an average speed of 218,426 km/h and the 1,000 km at an average of 205,932 km/h.

No one at that time had ever dreamt of such results from a bike created from an openly declared touring bike which was the V7 Special, so much so that the effects of such an accomplishment gave Moto Guzzi the incentive to create a sports model that was greatly appreciated by a new public compared to that acquired with the previous V7s. The task was given to Lino Tonti, one of the most brilliant Italian designers who, using the generous forms of the 750cc engine, built a highly streamline CrMo tubular frame. Low, long and hunched over the suspensions, the V7 Sport made its first appearance in the market with a rather unusual chromatic combination, obtained with the "Legnano" green used for the upper structures contrasting with the red frame of the first 150 specimens assembled in the Moto Guzzi testing department using a CrMo tubular frame as well as some changes to distribution and ignition details with respect to the next versions which had a black coloured frame.
Boasting an excellent dynamic performance, the V7 Sport impressed the public and critics alike for being the first mass produced bike in the world able to exceed the maximum speed of 200 km/h and this fact was worthy of a report in 1972 by a renowned Italian motorbike magazine. Symbol of the "Italian style" sports bike, all substance and no frills, the V7 Sport magically reappears today in the distinct lines of the new V7 Cafè Classic.

The similarities with its renowned ancestor blend together in the excellence of its dynamic performance and in the class of the stylistic features common to both, like the "Legnano" green of the upper structures, the rich chromings, the slanted half-handlebars, the instrument cockpit and other details that are unmistakably Moto Guzzi.

Technically speaking, the V7 Café Classic differs from its Tourer sister in having twin raised silencers that, apart from increasing ground clearance, provide a sportier exhaust note more suited to this model that, like its famed predecessor, boasts exceptional road-holding. The key to this legendary road-holding lies in its twin cradle frame with removable bolt-on lower components. Great attention was paid to the steering geometry where the rake is set at 27° 50' to ensure stability and precision when cornering. Of no less importance are the 40 mm Marzocchi forks. Travel on the front suspension is 130 mm and works in combination with two adjustable rear shock absorbers with 118 mm travel. Braking is looked after by a 320 mm floating disc at the front and a 260 mm disc at the rear. The V7 Classic is fitted with 18" wheels up front and 17" at the rear with high profile tyres so as to offer superb handling and feed-back characteristics.

All of the relish of challenges between gentlemen riders comes back to life in the classic sportiness of the V7.

Moto Guzzi V7 Clubman Racer is the end result of extensive tuning inspired by the motorcycles that in the 1970s challenged each other in the modified production category.

Races enlivened by heated rivalry between fans of the Japanese bikes, at the time extremely powerful but hard to handle, and fans of Italian motorcycles, perhaps on the minus side in terms of power but superior to their Oriental challengers when it came to their rigorous chassis and braking. Challenges on the tracks then shifted to tables at bars, where showing off a Moto Guzzi V7 Sport with single-seat saddle, racing exhaust system and the unfailing top fairing was the symbol of belonging to the elite of the sportiest motorcyclists.

The V7 Clubman Racer is the epitome of this snapshot taken more than 30 years ago, and reworks it by adopting the technology and quality standard of today's manufacturing processes.

The latest member of the V7 family is fitted with a top fairing inspired by the legendary 850 LeMans, a single-seat saddle with number plate, and even flaunts a roaring pair of Arrow silencers.

Its footrests moved back and adjustable handlebars make it inviting to take onto the track.

All that a gentleman rider in the mood for track days has to do is put on a helmet and a simple leather suit, find the ideal set-up by adjusting the sophisticated pair of Bitubo shock absorbers and guide the 18 inch front wheel as close as possible to the kerb.

The strong personality of the Moto Guzzi V7 Clubman Racer is also underscored by details like the chrome tank complete with knee guard, rear-view mirrors anchored to the ends of the handlebar, the chrome Moto Guzzi logo ornaments and the new racing fuel tank cap.

The rest of the bike follows the features of the V7 Cafè with regard to both chassis geometry, with its double cradle design and lower elements bolted on and removable, and to the geometry with the headstock tilted at 26°50'. In addition to the multi-adjustable Bitubo shock absorbers, the suspension banks on the absorption capacity of the Marzocchi fork with 40 mm stanchions and 130 mm travel.

The braking system consists of a 320 mm floating front disc and a 260 mm disc in the rear, while the spoke wheels have the same diameter as those of the V7 Cafè but instead of high profile tyres, they are equipped with the higher performance and aesthetically pleasing Pirelli Demon Sport, with a larger 140/70 tyre in rear.

This quote from "I promessi sposi" by Alessandro Manzoni, refers to Griso, the head of a group known as the "Bravi" "to whom the most dangerous jobs were entrusted". This refers to the character of the new Griso 8V SE that is the smartest and most high spirited Moto Guzzi ever made and that encompasses an absolute new sense of "Sporting spirit" stemming from the power and technology.
The Griso 8V SE is a Special Edition machine for collectors from Moto Guzzi who designed this version especially for the most demanding enthusiasts. This bike can be recognised immediately from its colour scheme, a beautiful shade of satinised green "Tenni" or with the new "Rosso Mandello" that enhances the sweeping lines of the frame and the unmistakeable architecture of the engine. The incredible valve performances of our engines are only possible because of Ducati's unique Desmodromic system, where valve closure is activated mechanically.

At high rpm it would be almost impossible for the valve to follow the steep closure profile of the cam lobe if it were relying upon a normal valve spring. With the Desmo system, the valve is closed mechanically with the same accuracy as it is opened, enabling steep cam profiles and radical cam timings.

Equipment
Single-seat cover
All 1198 models are fitted with a passenger seat which can easily be changed in seconds with a single-seat cover supplied with the bike. The colour-matched part gives the bike an instant racing-style rear-end.

Race kit
Included with the bike is a race kit consisting of a slip-on carbon fibre muffler kit by Termignoni with a dedicated ECU and a Ducati Performance rear paddock stand.
Stopwatch
The digital display is programmed with a stopwatch function that, when enabled, can be triggered by using the high-beam flash button and each recorded time stored in a memory. After your journey or track session, the times or lap times can be recalled from the memory and scrolled through by using the instrumentation buttons on the left-hand switchgear.

Controls
Ducati Superbikes are equipped with adjustable levers that operate Brembo radial-type master cylinders with remote reservoirs. Add easy-to-use switchgear with stopwatch function and DTC and DDA management and it becomes clear that functionality plays a major role alongside performance.

Lighting
The horizontal twin headlamps, a signature Ducati style from the iconic 916, are modernised with the latest lighting technology. Two polyellipsoidal units light the way with a powerful beam while maintaining an aggressive look to the front of the machine in pure Ducati Superbike tradition.

The rear light employs a specially designed strip of LEDs enhanced by a high diffusion lens shaped into the sleek lines of the tailpiece. The same LEDs are intensified for brake lights.

The directional indicators also use the latest in LED technology for illumination. The frontal indicators are beautifully integrated into the rear view mirrors.
Mirror extension kit
All Superbike mirrors come with an optional spacer kit enabling an extension of 30mm over the standard mirror stem length.

DDA
The Ducati Data Analyser (DDA), which includes PC software, a USB-ready data retrieval card and instructions, enables you to review and analyse your performance and that of the bike's, and to make comparisons between various channels of information.

The system records numerous channels of data including throttle opening (A), vehicle speed (B), engine rpm (C), engine temperature (D), distance travelled (E), laps and lap times. It also automatically calculates engine rpm and vehicle speed data, enabling it to display gear selection (F) as an additional channel of information. An additional channel of information is now dedicated to recording the DTC index (G) which can then be viewed as a graphic trace and indicates the amount of DTC interaction during wheel-spin (Subject to model).

At the end of a ride or track session, up to 4mb of data can be downloaded ready to compare, analyse and get an inside view of the performance of both you and the bike.
Carbon fibre
Weight saving is further enhanced with the application of a carbon fibre front fender.

GP-derived instruments
This pure racing digital instrumentation originating from Ducati's MotoGP project has no switches or buttons to compromise its clean, minimalist lines. Instead, information additional to the default read-outs is managed from the left-hand handlebar-mounted switch gear, allowing the rider to scroll through and select from various menus.

The display, which has a bright white LED back lighting, presents rpm and speed, with the former displayed across the screen in a progressive bar graph. Optionally, the rpm and speed can be displayed in numeric values. Additionally, it displays lap times, DTC level selected (if activated on 1198 S, 1198 S Corse and 1198 R Corse) time, air temperature, coolant temperature, battery voltage, two trips and a trip that automatically starts as the fuel system goes onto reserve.

Warning lights illuminate to signify neutral, turn signals, high-beam, rev-limit, low oil pressure, fuel reserve, DTC intervention (if activated on 1198 S, 1198 S Corse and 1198 R Corse) and scheduled maintenance. The instrument display is also used as the control panels for the DDA (DDA kit supplied as standard on 1198 S, 1198 S Corse and 1198 R Corse) and DTC systems as well as listing lap times recorded by using the high-beam flash button as a stopwatch.

DTC
Ducati were the first manufacturer to introduce a true competition-level traction control system on a production motorcycle. The Ducati Traction Control (DTC) system further underlines Ducati's technology flow from racing to production and demonstrates how solutions developed for the track can be applied to enhance performance safety on the road.
DTC uses the same software logic developed and used by Ducati Corse for their World Championship-winning MotoGP and World Superbike motorcycles and offers a choice of eight settings developed by their professional test riders and racers.

Accessible from the left-hand switchgear and displayed on the digital instrumentation, the system offers a choice of eight profiles, each one programmed with a wheel-spin tolerance matched to progressive riding levels of skill graded from one to eight. While level eight administers a confidence-building, high level of interaction from the system by activating upon the slightest amount of wheel-spin, level one offers a much higher tolerance and, therefore, much less intervention for highly competent riders.

DESIGN

The compartment also incorporates mobile phone storage and a 12V power socket. The vehicle documents and toolkit are also located inside the same compartment, leaving access to the battery and fuses free. The Mana 850 is the first motorcycle ever to provide fully integrated helmet storage, a unique and immensely practical advantage, especially for urban commuting and short trips. The compartment is opened electrically by a convenient switch on the handlebars. The lid opens under the control of a hydropneumatic damper that prevents accidental opening while the bike is in motion. Aprilia is continuing to blaze the trail that the SL 750 Shiver began, and is manufacturing the Aprilia Mana 850 engine completely in-house.

Mana 850: the future of the gearbox
The most interesting aspect of the Mana engine is without a doubt its primary drive system, based on an electronically controlled, sequential transmission that offers the rider a choice of control modes.

Riders can choose from two options:

- Sequential mode: The rider decides for himself when to change gear, either using the conventional pedal or a switch on the handlebars. A servo mechanism shifts the main pulley to change between the seven gear ratios amazingly quickly. During deceleration, if the rider omit to change gear manually, the control system intervenes to change down automatically, preventing engine speed from dropping below the set threshold and providing another valuable aid to active safety.

- Fully automatic mode (Autodrive): Sophisticated electronics assume control over everything, and the CVT transmission keeps the engine running at maximum torque speed for optimum pickup and acceleration. The Sportgear transmission offers a choice of three mappings:
Touring: for minimum consumption and maximum usability.
Sport: for top performance with blistering acceleration
Rain: for use on wet or slippery roads

Semi-Autodrive mode allows the rider only to change down independently. This is particularly useful for overtaking at maximum torque revs or for boosting engine braking when riding down a hill. You can switch from Autodrive to Sequential mode and back at any time, irrespective of riding conditions. The handlebar gearshift control can also be disabled from the dashboard. The revolutionary transmission system of the Aprilia Mana 850 in no way reduces the pleasure of motorcycling. If anything, it adds the thrill of lightning fast gear changes and improves the performance of the engine under acceleration and on fast roads. A click of the switch is all that is needed to switch from one mode to the other, from relaxed cruising to exhilarating sports riding. With an engine and transmission like this, the potential of your motorcycle has never been greater. The 90° V engine configuration, chosen for torque and power delivery, is the perfect match for this type of transmission. The engine delivers 76 horsepower at the crank and well in excess of 7 kgm of torque (at 5,000 rpm). Most important of all is an extremely flat power curve that translates into plenty of ready power even at low revs.

These specifications clearly express the performance of this unique motorcycle, which easily beats other nakeds of similar displacement thanks to its amazing acceleration. The four valves per cylinder are operated by a single chain driven overhead camshaft, a solution that combines ease of maintenance with effective performance. As is traditional for Aprilia’s big bike engines, lubrication is provided by a dry sump system, with a separate oil reservoir integrated inside the engine to minimise overall weight. Efficient engine breathing is ensured by a generous size filter box and exhaust system. The electronic engine management system incorporates a sophisticated Weber Marelli electronic fuel injection unit with a single 38 mm throttle body and twin spark ignition. These two technical solutions combine to guarantee optimal combustion at all engine speeds, maximum thermodynamic efficiency, and therefore amazing performance despite low emissions. The Mana’s high performance engine respects the environment too. The stainless steel exhaust incorporates a catalytic converter and a Lambda probe oxygen sensor to bring emissions well within the limits established by Euro 3.

FRAME
The handling of the Aprilia Mana 850 is not just the result of a revolutionary engine but of an advanced chassis too. As with all Aprilia motorcycles, the frame of the Mana 850 has been developed in parallel with the engine to ensure the sort of harmony between engine and chassis that has always distinguished Aprilia motorcycles.

The robust steel tube trellis frame sets new standards for this class of machine and ensures top level handling in line with the characteristics of the innovative engine. The single piece aluminium swingarm is damped by a monoshock that is laterally offset to free up space for the exhaust pipe behind the engine and make the motorcycle more compact. The Mana 850 has a wheelbase of only 1,463 mm, extremely short for a naked, even a sports model.

SUSPENSION
On all Aprilias, the excellence of the chassis is maximised by an ideal suspension configuration and setup. Here too the Mana 850 accepts no compromises. The 43 mm upside down fork slides easily and features an optimised setup for excellent performance even under sport riding conditions. 120 mm of front wheel travel lets you tackle all sorts of road surface. At the rear, the monoshock is operated directly by the swingarm without intermediary linkages, and offers adjustments for spring preload and hydraulic rebound damping. Rear wheel travel is 125 mm.

BRAKES
Impressive stopping power is delivered by the very best braking technology currently available, developed in-house by Aprilia. Radial calipers with 4 pistons are the state of the art for motorcycle brakes and ensure maximum active safety under all braking conditions. We build the Phantom EG (code named "EG" or Erasmus' Gamble) the way we have always built motorbikes -- by the hands of skilled artisans. Our lads specify or form every piece of the machine. Of course, no two clients are the exact same shape, or have the exact same taste. As a result, every Phantom is unique, 'commissioned' as would a piece of fine art. The EG was designed from the start as an homage to those amazing machines that spunky gentlemen (and ladies) used to set speed records at Brooklands and board track racer circuits back in the 1920s.

History

Eighty years have passed since the last machine rolled out of the Phantom works.

This is the first article for our Fused 5: Five Days of Knight! – Getting everyone “Fused” for the upcoming Dark Knight film.

Did you know that there were TWO Batman movies before the (incredibly camp) 1966 outing? (1943 and 1949 respectively) For those of you who did, did you know that there was NO Batmobile in either one?

That’s right, Batman was condemned to wander the streets on foot, or catch a bus, or driving round in a dodgy looking convertible (okay so I made the bus one up).

So with that in mind, I think you can guess the first ‘mean machine’ I’ll be rolling out for you all:Batmobile Replica

The 1966 Batmobile (A 1954 Lincoln Ventura)

There you have it folks, the original – and arguably the most iconic – Batmobile was none other than a customized Lincoln Ventura, bought from Ford as a last minute fix.

But what a fix! Not only did the design excite children and parents alike, but it also remains to this day one of the most recognizable cars in the world!

The Ventura-Batmobile ran through both seasons of the Batman TV Series and also featured in the 1966 movie of the same name, not a bad investment as it’s purchase price amounted to just $1.00!

1990 & 1992 Batmobile

After the Batman TV Series was cancelled after only two seasons, it would be nearly a quarter of a century before we saw the Batmobile on screens again. In that time the comics had evolved into much a darker, sleeker incarnation of their former selves, and this was reflected in the 1990 hit BATMAN, directed by Tim Burton.

For what is considered the first major appearance of Batman in film, Burton designed a world full of crime and decay, with mean streets and even meaner criminals. For this world, Burton needed a mean machine that was up to the job!

The Batmobile in BATMAN was built on the longer platform of a Chevrolet Caprice, while for BATMAN RETURNS he opted for a Buick Riviera. Two things remained constant throughout both of these movies, the car looked the same, and all the gadgets are reported to have been fully functional.

Now I don’t mean that in Batman Returns the car fully folded in on itself to pass through a small alleyway, but to take an example of the mastery of these vehicles you need only look at its jet engine. The FULLY FUNCIONAL jet engine consumed fuel at such an outstanding rate that there was only enough fuel capacity to run it for approximately fifteen seconds!

Tim Burton’s version of the Batmobile was later seen in the Louis & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman episode called “Don’t Tug On Superman’s Cape,” an episode which shows that some collectors had apparently stolen the Batmobile.

1995 Batmobile – (The Kilmer Car)

For the 1995 film BATMAN FOREVER, we were supposed to be treated to a new Batmobile designed by ALIENS creator H. R. GIGER, unfortunately, Warner Bros rejected his plans and Giger pulled out.

Instead we were given a car designed by Barbara Ling. Ling wanted a Batmobile that looked more organic, and so created a car that looked like it sported ribs and wings (no I’m not talking takeaway here folks). As well as the ribcage, there were several other additions to the car that made this machine stand out from the rest. Included in the changes were a front-lit nose, bat-sign wheel detail and a fin that could open into a ‘V’ shape (I guess the last one is to give the V-Sign to other drivers when you have your hands full).

Like the movie, the vehicle (while quite cool looking) tanked. It was just too much, it wasn’t BATMAN. After all, how could he be called ‘The Dark Knight’ if he drove around lit up like a Christmas tree?

1997 Batmobile (The Pratmobile)

Next came a new improved Christmas tree – I mean Batmobile. Okay so the car wasn’t half bad, it’s just a shame it was wasted on such a terrible movie!

Joel Schumacher returned to direct what would become known as the worst Batman film ever, and nearly buried the franchise in the process.

This time around Ling felt that her creation needed much more screen presence, and as such she set out to design a car that was truly larger than life.

Measuring 30ft long and hitting speeds of 140mph (presumably in straight lines), Ling set about creating a car she could be truly proud of…

…I bet now she wished she hadn’t bothered!

2005 + Batmobile (The Tumbler)

Nearly a decade after Batman & Robin, WARNER BROS decided to have a go at ‘re-booting’ the Batman franchise. They chose a young, quiet, relatively unknown director by the name of Chris Nolan to helm the project and the rest, as they say, is history.

In Chris’s world, BATMAN would literally leave the page of the comic book and become as real as you or I, and to reflect that, his ride needed some serious pimping!

THE TUMBLER, as its known, is completely different from anything in either the movies or the comic books before it. The closest comparison would be the tank driven in Frank Miller’s ‘The Dark Knight Returns’.

Designed by Nathan Crowley & Christopher Nolan and built by movie car engineers Chris Corbould and Andy Smith, The Tumbler – it has to be said – is probably the most ugly ‘car’ I’ve ever seen. But therein lays its beauty.

Rather than opting for neon lights and bat signs, the creators of this masterpiece have designed the car around its purpose. Function over aesthetics, NOT the other way around.

The Tumbler itself was worked into the story both quickly and easily, for a company such as Wayne Enterprises, having experimental military kit laying around doing nothing is not too much of a stretch for the imagination. Give it a black spray job and VIOLA! Instant Batmobile!

Weighing in at a massive 2.5 tons and measuring 9 feet wide and 15 feet long, it’s difficult to believe that this chunky looking monster can still get from 0-60 in under 10 seconds. Well guess what? It can.

The center stack and console controls are fairly well laid out and identified with labels that are spare yet artistically presented, designed to enhance the ambience of modern design rather than exist simply as a necessary evil.

Fundamentally Sound
The Jaguar XF's long wheelbase pays dividends in rear-seat space and helps to keep more of the XF's 4,200-pound heft within the space delineated by its axles. This stance contributes to the XF's assured demeanor on the road and provides a supple ride quality that surprisingly isn't degraded by the colossal 20-inch wheels as severely as we first anticipated. Still, the XF's slalom result of 66.7 mph is impressively rapid, and in anything short of a full-on blitzkrieg pace, the XF is a willing partner. It turns in cleanly and demonstrates a handling balance that isn't afraid of throttle adjustments in order to tighten the line through a corner. More aggressive seat bolsters would be a welcome addition in this environment, but maybe racy seats would be at odds with the XF's cool vibe.

MIT plans 'Stackable' Cars for the Future

"Imagine a shopping cart - a vehicle that can stack - you can take the first vehicle out of a stack and off you go," says Mr Chin an architect and engineer at MIT's media lab and a member of Prof Mitchell's research group. "These stacks would be placed throughout the city. A good place would be outside a subway station or a bus line or an airport, places where there's a convergence of transportation lines and people." MIT has been working on these 'Stackable' Cars for the for the past 4 years. They will generate zero pollution and will be customizable. A final design will be presented to General Motors in a few months, which will build a prototype. Something to look for in the near future.

Volvo has tested a concept that doesn't use gasoline or even have an engine, but it does need to be on an inclined plane though. The Volvo concept uses Sir Isaac Newton's fave force to power it, propelling it up to speeds of 54mph. Though fastest in the Extreme Gravity Competition held in California, which saw other automotive heavyweights such as Audi and Bentley competing, you won't see this concept on the road ever.

The BMW 1 series Sports Hatch comes in models 116, 118, or 120, easily fits four, has enough cargo space for two, and is perfect for the streets of Europe. These aren't available in the US... but are very popular in Europe. It would be an adventure to purchase this car overseas and deliver it back to the states... off course, after testing the Autobahn. The cost of a three-year lease, which is to include maintenance and collision insurance, is a piddling $600 a month. All in all, the Clarity is a far cry from the breadbox-shaped original FCX. Beyond its ~~obvious~~ purported earth-saving virtues, it’s spacious, luxurious, and, if we may, even a little sexy. Now, if Honda can solve the problem if establishing a hydrogen refueling infrastructure, we may have a winner.

Company president Takeo Fukui says Honda is investing heavily in hybrids and insists the race "has just begun." The technology’s first phase was all about cultivating a green image, Fukui says, clearly taking a swipe at Toyota. The next phase will emphasize making the vehicles more affordable and fuel efficient, he says, and Honda has two cars in the pipeline that he promises will challenge Toyota’s eco-supremacy.

"The real full-scale hybrid competition will start from now," Fukui says.

Fukui’s got his work cut out for him. The Prius is synonmous with hybrid technology, and 79 percent of the gas-electric vehicles that rolled out of American showrooms last month were Toyotas. Just one in 10 were Hondas, and the company has discontinued the Insight and Accord hybrid. Yet during his year-end speech to employees, Fukui predicted hybrids will account for 10 percent of Honda’s sales by 2010. To reach that goal, Honda will have to sell some 400,000 hybrids a year.

It may not be enough. Toyota says it wants to sell 1 million hybrids a year within the first half of the next decade.

If Audi should see the logic in providing such a performance car in the U.S. market, its price would rival that of the BMW M3 .

For those who feel the 370Z doesn't have enough performance, Nissan has created the Nismo 370Z. You can liken the car, which bears the name of Nissan's Motorsports arm (Nismo), to a tuner version of the popular sports coupe, but all the tweaks were made in-house. The car was developed by Nismo and the company's conversion specialist, Autech, in Japan.

It's immediately clear — this isn't your ordinary 370Z. The wild body kit includes an extended nose, new side sills and flashy rear spoiler. There are also shapely new front fenders that are reminiscent of a European supercar. Nissan claims that all the body pieces are functional, providing extra downforce at high speed. Inside the cockpit, Nismo logos on the seats and instruments tell you that this isn't your everyday 370Z.

Under the hood, Nismo breathed an extra 18 bhp into the 3.7-liter V-6, so now it pumps out 350 at 7400 rpm and 276 lb.-ft. of torque at 5200. With the added power, and no weight gain, the Nismo 370Z will be quicker than the stock car in a straight line. We expect 0 to 60 mph times of 4.5 seconds.

The car's handling has been improved, too, via stiffer suspension. Compared to the standard setup, front spring rates have been dialed up 15 percent, and rear spring rates increased 10 percent. There are also fatter anti-roll bars at both ends. Overall, roll stiffness has been increased by 15 percent, says Nissan, and the front and rear damping factors have been increased by 40 percent and 140 percent respectively. Although the ride quality will be harsher, the Nismo Z will undoubtedly take corners better and be faster around a racetrack.

The Nismo 370Z will be sold at Nissan dealerships starting in June. Although prices have not yet been announced, we're expecting something in the neighborhood of $37,000.

Ferrari brought two new versions of the 599 GTB Fiorano to its show stand in Switzerland — a handling package, called the HGTE (for Handling Gran Turismo Evoluzione), as well as the 599XX, which will no doubt prove to be one of the world's greatest track-day cars.

The "select group of clients" who buy the Ferrari 599XX (which is not designed for competition use) will be getting a car that the company says "incorporates the most advanced technologies resulting from Ferrari's road -going and Formula 1 research." The output of the 599's 6.0-liter V-12 was increased from 611 bhp to 700 bhp (DIN) through modifications to its combustion chambers and inlet and exhaust tracts; redline was raised to 9000 rpm (from 8400).

Ferrari says the 599XX features a "plethora of aerodynamic, electronic control and handling innovations used together for the first time on a single car, making this model a genuine technological laboratory." One of those innovations is what Ferrari calls the "Actiflow" system, which increases downforce or cuts drag depending on the car's cornering attitude, "courtesy of the use of a porous material in the diffuser and two fans in the trunk which channel the air flow from under the car out through the two grilles next to the taillights." Ferrari says the 599XX produces 617 lb. of downforce at 124 mph and almost 1400 lb. of downforce at 186 mph. The F1-derived "doughnuts" partly covering the wheels and brake discs improve both aerodynamics and brake cooling.

Speaking of the brakes, the 599XX's carbon-ceramic brake system now uses carbon pads, which allow for smaller calipers and, hence, even more weight savings, while further pounds were shaved by the car's extensive use of carbon-fiber body panels. The car's extra power, active downforce devices, improved grip (the 599XX uses 19-in. slicks front and rear) and reduced weight resulted in a lap time of 1 minute 17 sec. around Ferrari's Fiorano race track.

Ferrari will organize a series of track days specifically for owners of the 599XX in 2010 and 2011.

The Tiguan has been under development for several years and was not put together hurriedly to grab a piece of the expanding new segment, but the competition will be tough from the likes of the BMW X3, Ford Escape, Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4 and Saturn Vue.

Once inside and on the road, or off-road, you will agree that this is one of the best compact sport utility vehicles on the market. VW’s prowess in styling, engineering, performance, manufacturing, quality and safety is easily seen.

VW offers two styles of Tiguan-the Sport & Style comes to the US, and is a more on-road tuned vehicle with a deeper front airdam, while the European only Track & Field models features a higher front end to give it more off-road manners and a better 28-degree approach angle.

None the less, the all-new Tiguan brings news levels of design, driving dynamics, safety features, plus a long list of luxury and conveniences that are sure to win over many consumers.

It is fun-to-drive with excellent handling and performance characteristics. It is also the first compact sport utility to offer a standard 6-speed manual, or an optional 6-speed automatic, and is built on the proven VW GTI and Rabbit chassis.

The unique styling of the front fascia is highlighted with a deep front airdam, crisp lines and brightwork around the new two-stage grille. Jewel-like bi-xenon headlamps lead into a clam-shell styled hood. The tall greenhouse, also comes with a chrome strip surround, and gives a feeling of space. At the rear, large shoulders blend into the flared fenders below the D-pillars giving it the look of strength. The rear fascia features a tall and wide liftgate, step-up bumper, large, wraparound lamp clusters, and two round exhaust pipes peering out from under the left side of the bumper. Even the bright silver roof rails seem to be an integral part of the vehicle. It also expands the cargo-carrying capacity.

From the side is a wedge shape from the low front end all the way to the end of the roof.
Its curving lines create a feeling of motion, even when parked. The flared fenders are stuffed with 18X8in. alloy wheels and wrapped with 235/50R18in. all-season radial tires. The unique styling shows both toughness and elegance, with just the right amount of elements from each.

Under the skin are VW’s proven powertrain, fully independent suspension, powerful 4-wheel disc brakes and stability control systems.

All Tiguan model receive the 2.0 liter turbo-charged inline 4-cylinder engine. It generates a healthy 200hp at 5,00rpm and 207lb.ft. of torque between 1,700 and 5,000rpm. It is one of the best engines for a quick launch, driving at cruising speeds during long trips, and when encountering stop and go rush-hour traffic. This potent engine is mated to either the standard 6-speed manual front-wheel-drive transmission, or VW’s proven 6-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission. On the highway the automatic returns 24mpg, and 18mpg in the city. The 4Motion AWD system is by Haldex and comes with an electronic differential lock with 90% of the torque channeled to the front wheels in normal driving conditions but with the ability to channel torque to any of the wheels that have traction, instantly.

Underpinning the steel monocoque chassis is a fully independent suspension to smooth out the bumps and to give you precise reaction to your inputs whether driving straight-ahead or when encountering curving roads. Up front are wheel-locating MacPherson struts, an axle assembly with triangular lower wishbones, steel coil springs, anti-roll bar, and a single piece aluminum subframe. The rear setup features 4-links, steel coil springs, gas-charged shocks and an anti-roll bar. The ride was impressive when going over poorly paved road surfaces, and with the new electro-mechanical rack & pinion steering system, even faster reaction with more precise feedback from the road. Turn-in was very good and it built up my confidence to push for more speed.

Part of that confidence building was due to the strong stopping power of the all-new Tiguan. These 4-wheel disc brakes really felt like I was stopping on a dime. Up front are 12.2in. vented discs clamped with dual-piston calipers, while the rear features 11.2in solid discs clamped with single-piston calipers. Further enhancing the stopping power and control during severe maneuvers is standard ABS, traction control, brake assist, electronic brake force distribution, and engine brake assist. The standard electronic stabilization program helps to keep you in control of the direction that you want to be headed in.

The interior cabin is roomy and very comfortable. Luxury, convenience and high-tech features abound throughout the cabin, more to the levels found in the BMW X3. Soft-to-the-touch quality material lines the dashboard and shelf for a high-quality look.
The interior is designed for you and your passenger’s convenience with flexible seating including reclining rear seats with 6in. of fore-aft travel, including a front-passenger seat that folds flat to increase the length of cargo that you can easily load. The optional panoramic sunroof lets in lots of air and sunlight that gives a feeling of added space because it is now so much more light and airy.

The doors open wide to make entering and exiting safe and easy. The front bucket seats are very comfortable, supportive and heated. The convenient center console holds storage slots, dual cup-holders, and a storage bin with padded armrest. In front of the cupholders is a shift gate surrounded with aluminum trim. There are more aluminum trim pieces on the dashboard, door handles, audio, navigation, climate control dials and steering wheel.

Visibility is excellent from inside and the privacy glass cuts down on heat and damaging sun rays as well as keeping the interior more secure.

The new instrument panel has big dials for the speedometer and tachometer with smaller gauges for the fuel on board and engine temperature coolant, all surrounded by aluminum bezels. Inside, the center screen gives you vital information about how the systems are doing, plus outside temperature, odometer, trip computer, etc.

The 60/40 split 2nd row also features a drop-down center armrest with dual cup-holders, coat hanger clips and reading lamps at each back door… In the rear of the center console are air-ducts to help channel air to the seat, and pop-out dual cup-holders.

Above each door is a grab handle for easy entry and exit. The rear cargo hold features chrome tie-downs, storage bins, cargo cover, light, and an under-floor storage area.
The loaded Tiguan SEL 4Motion model that I tested came with these standard features: dual-zone climate control with pollen filter, intermittent wipers with rain sensor speed control, DynAudio 300-watt audio system with 9-speakers and a subwoofer, 3-spoke, leather wrapped/tilt/telescope steering wheel with redundant buttons for the audio system and trip computer, leather wrapped shift knob, 12-way power driver seat, map pockets behind the front seats, express up/down power windows, power door locks, anti-theft deterrent system, self-dimming rearview mirror, power, heated rear-view mirrors with heated washer nozzles, privacy glass rear side and tailgate windows, thick-cut pile carpeting with front/rear/cargo floor mats, dual map lamps, and sunglass holder in the overhead console.

Options include DVD navigation system with rear backup camera, and a large, power panoramic sunroof.

Standard safety features include driver/front passenger airbags, driver/front passenger side airbags, front/rear side curtain head impact airbags, 3-point safety belts for all seating areas, LATCH child seat anchors, front/rear crush zones, side impact beams in each door, child safety rear door locks, and a tire pressure monitoring system.

The all-new VW Tiguan compact sport utility or crossover, whichever you want to label it, maybe late to the party, but the party has really just begun as this segment needs high-quality vehicles, like the Tiguan, and is growing in popularity with consumers every month. The base price for a nicely equipped Tiguan is $23,200.00, while my fully loaded SEL 4Motion model stickered at $37,230.00, including $699.00 destination charges.

The 2009 Volkswagen Jetta Sportswagon S is one of the best small, sporty wagons with an emphasis on flexibility and versatility. Large steel disc brakes at all four corners quickly and safely brings the VW Jetta Sportwagon S to a stop. Up front are 12.2in. vented discs clamped by dual-piston calipers and in the rear are 11.6in. solid discs clamped with single-piston calipers.

Braking control and power are enhanced with standard ABS and brake assist.
My Jetta Sporwagon S rides on standard 205/55R16in. Continental Contact tires wrapped around 16X7in. alloy wheels which was the only option on my test vehicle. The standard package is 16X7in. steel wheels with covers.

VW puts safety to the extreme with a host of standard features including electronic stability control, traction control, driver/front passenger front airbag, driver/front passenger side airbags, side curtain protection for front and rear, emergency locking retractors for all seating positions, lower anchors for LATCH child seat, daytime running lamps, directional signal lights on side-mirrors, side protection door beams, front/rear crush zones, and a tire pressure monitor system.

The 2009 Jetta Sportswagon S is a fine German made wagon that is fun to drive, comfortable for 5-passengers, and flexible enough for all active lifestyle and growing family needs. It tested the base S trim level and was very satisfied with my test drive.

The Honda DN-01 combines the user friendliness of a scooter with the image of a performance cruiser and totally original, futuristic looks. Its unique selling point is the Human Friendly Transmission, a CVT programmed to work like a six-speed manual or a full automatic.
